Simple ways for busy moms to practice self-care with or without cannabis.
As moms, it often feels like we’re running on empty. Between managing the kids, work, household duties, and everything else life throws at us, it’s easy to forget about ourselves. But here’s the truth: self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. If you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t have the energy to take care of everyone else.
I’ve found that small acts of self-care make a huge difference, and whether you include cannabis in your routine or prefer to keep it simple, there are plenty of ways to recharge your mind and body. Here are some of my favorite tips for practicing self-care as a busy mom.
1. Start Your Day with Intention
We all know how hectic mornings can be, but setting aside just 5–10 minutes of quiet time before the day really begins can help you feel more grounded. If you’re a cannabis user, a small dose of a sativa strain or a CBD tincture can be a nice way to wake up your mind and ease into the day. If not, a simple cup of tea or a quick journaling session can help set the tone.
Take a few moments to breathe, stretch, and think about how you want to approach the day. It’s amazing how much better you feel when you start with a little mindfulness.
2. Take Mini Breaks Throughout the Day
With everything on your plate, finding time for long breaks might feel impossible, but mini breaks are your new best friend. Even 5 minutes of uninterrupted “me” time can make a difference. Step outside for some fresh air, meditate, or just sit in silence.
If you like to incorporate cannabis, a microdose (2–5mg) can help give you a quick mental reset without slowing you down. If cannabis isn’t your thing, try deep breathing exercises or a quick stretch to loosen up and clear your mind.
3. Move Your Body
Physical activity is one of the most effective ways to boost your mood and energy levels, but it doesn’t mean you need a full gym session. Even a 15-minute walk around the block with your kids or a quick at-home yoga session can work wonders for your body and mind.
For cannabis enthusiasts, consider trying a CBD balm for sore muscles or using a light dose of an energizing strain before working out to add an extra boost to your routine. Movement is key to self-care, so whether it’s dancing around the living room or taking a walk, make it a priority to get moving.
4. Treat Yourself to a Relaxing Ritual
When the kids are in bed and the house is quiet, it’s time for you. This is the perfect moment for a calming ritual—something that helps you unwind after a busy day. You might enjoy a long bath with essential oils, a soothing cup of tea, or maybe a bit of cannabis to help ease your body and mind.
For those who like to include cannabis, an indica strain or a CBD-infused bath can be incredibly relaxing. If you’re going cannabis-free, a hot bath with some lavender oil or a guided meditation can do the trick. Whatever your ritual, make sure it’s something you truly enjoy and look forward to.
5. Nourish Your Body with Good Food
When life gets busy, it’s easy to grab something quick and not-so-healthy, but good nutrition is key to feeling your best. Make time to fuel your body with meals that nourish rather than deplete your energy. If you enjoy cooking, try experimenting with healthy, delicious meals, and for those who like a little cannabis in the kitchen, you can always add a CBD-infused dish or an edible treat.
If you’re in a rush, smoothies are a great go-to for busy moms—add some leafy greens, fruits, and a boost of protein. For cannabis users, you can sneak in a few drops of CBD oil for a calming effect without the high.
6. Prioritize Rest and Sleep
Sleep is one of the most essential (and often neglected) parts of self-care. I know how hard it can be to get a full night’s sleep when you have young kids, but even making an effort to rest when you can is a form of self-care. Creating a nighttime routine helps signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.
Cannabis can be helpful here too—many moms use an indica strain or CBD products to help them relax and get a better night’s sleep. If you’re not a cannabis user, try natural methods like herbal teas (chamomile is great) or reading a book to help you ease into sleep.
7. Ask for Help and Set Boundaries
Self-care also means recognizing when you need help. It’s okay to ask for support—whether it’s your partner, family, or friends. Set boundaries with your time and energy so you don’t get overwhelmed. Learning to say no when you need to is one of the most important self-care practices you can adopt.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a break, and don’t feel guilty about taking one. We all need time to recharge, and that doesn’t make you any less of a supermom.
8. Embrace the Power of “No”
One of the hardest but most powerful forms of self-care is learning to say “no.” Whether it’s turning down extra work, declining a social invitation when you’re feeling overwhelmed, or telling yourself to rest instead of pushing through, setting boundaries is essential for your mental and physical well-being.
Cannabis can help make this easier for some by easing anxiety or stress, but even without it, it’s important to know your limits. Saying “no” is an act of self-love.
9. Do Something You Love
Lastly, don’t forget to do something that lights you up. Whether it’s reading a book, writing, traveling, baking, or just spending time with friends—make time for the things that bring you joy. For me, it’s cooking and taking trips with Emberly, but everyone’s self-care looks different.
If cannabis helps enhance your creativity or enjoyment in these activities, go for it. If not, that’s okay too! The key is to prioritize your happiness and make time for what you love, even in the chaos of mom life.
Finding What Works for You
Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or time-consuming. It’s about tuning into your needs, finding what makes you feel good, and making space for it, even in the busiest of days. Whether you incorporate cannabis into your routine or prefer traditional methods, the most important thing is that you take time for yourself.
Remember, moms—you can’t pour from an empty cup. Fill yours up first, and the rest will follow. You deserve it!
